On the morning of December 12, 1936, it seemed to be normal in Xi'an. But, this was an astonishing day for China and the world: President Jiang was captured. Several important Nationalists, such as Chen Cheng (who later became "vice-president" of Taiwan) and Wei Lihuang were kidnapped also.

Zhang xueliang's army had arrived at President Jiang Jieshi's house 5 a.m. Jiang was awakened by the sounds from outside and escaped quickly through the window. He was finally caught near the Hua Ching Pool..
